Two surnames possible soon

Children will soon be able to get both their parents' surnames, in the order their parents want. After the House of Representatives, the Senate also approved this bill. The background of the law is that two surnames show the child's affiliation with both parents. Parents can give a double gender name to the first child in a family. This choice will then also applies to any subsequent children.

The law was originally intended only for newborn babies, but the rules have since been amended to include all children born on or after January 1, 2016. Parents who still want to change the surname for these children will have one year from the entry into force of the law (1 January 2024) to arrange this. Read more information on Rijksoverheid.nl
