Amsterdam 750th anniversary: June 20-22

In the weekend from Friday, June 20 to Sunday, June 22, 2025, Amsterdam will celebrate its 750th anniversary. During this celebration, the A10 ‘ring’ road will be partially closed to car traffic. Also, roads leading into and out of the city will be closed.

Because of these closures, it may be more difficult to reach your home or a hospital. The midwives of Amsterdam who care for you describe in this letter how we will continue to make midwifery care possible for you during this time.

Important points at a glance:

1.      Home births remain possible: If you plan to give birth at home, that is still possible. We will remain available to assist with births, even during the anniversary weekend.

2.      If you choose a hospital birth: please keep in mind that you may not be able to go to the hospital of your first choice. Due to limited accessibility during the anniversary weekend, it may be necessary to go to a hospital closer by or outside the city, such as in Haarlem, Amstelveen, or Zaandam. We will look together at the best accessible option at that time and ensure you are guided in a safe and familiar way.

3.      Medical check-ups: If you need a medical check-up, we will meet you at the most suitable location during this weekend. This could be at your home, the practice, or one of the emergency posts we have set up for this purpose. We will make fewer home visits than usual due to traffic disruptions. Postnatal visits will be done by phone if possible.

4.      Different midwife: In some cases, you may see a midwife you have not met before for a check-up or the birth. We do our best to have familiar faces, but we ask for your understanding if this is not possible given the traffic situation.
