The Minister of Health decided on 12 October 2026 that the 13-week ultrasound will not become a permanent part of prenatal screening.

The 13-week ultrasound is an examination performed early in pregnancy to check whether the baby has any major physical abnormalities. Since September 2021, this ultrasound has been offered as part of a scientific study; the IMITAS study. The study shows that parents receive information about their baby's health at an early stage. However, it has also shown that the results are regularly incorrect. This may cause unnecessary worry for parents.

The Health Council of the Netherlands has reviewed the results of the study and provided advice to the Minister. Based on this advice, the Minister has decided not to introduce the 13-week ultrasound as a permanent part of prenatal screening.

Pregnant women can still choose to have the 13-week ultrasound until 1 January 2028. After that date, the ultrasound will no longer be offered. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and other organisations involved are preparing for the discontinuation of the 13-week ultrasound.
